Fall in Reno-Tahoe: One of the Best Times to Enjoy Our Region
There’s something special about September in the Reno-Tahoe region. The busy days of summer begin to settle down, mornings get a little cooler, the aspens start hinting at fall color, and we enter what I think is one of the best seasons to enjoy everything our area has to offer.
Whether you live here full-time, own a second home, or are thinking about making Reno-Tahoe part of your future, fall is a great reminder of why so many of us love calling this region home.
September Is Packed With Things to Do
One of the things I love about living here is that there is always something happening—and September is no exception.
The month kicks off with one of Northern Nevada’s signature traditions, The Great Reno Balloon Race at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Seeing dozens of colorful hot-air balloons filling the early-morning sky is one of those experiences that never gets old.
September also brings Northern Nevada Pride to Reno, along with the Reno Tahoe International Art Show, which attracts galleries, artists, collectors, and art lovers from throughout the region and beyond.
Closer to the lake, Oktoberfest at Palisades Tahoe is a fun way to welcome fall in the mountains, with Bavarian-inspired food, music, games, and festivities in the Village.
And, of course, you don’t necessarily need an organized event to enjoy this time of year.
A hike or bike ride, an afternoon on the lake, a round of golf, or simply sitting outside on a beautiful September evening can be just as memorable.
A Different Side of Tahoe
Summer gets plenty of attention in Lake Tahoe, and winter certainly has its loyal following, but the transition between the two seasons is something special.
The crowds begin to thin, temperatures become more comfortable, and our mountain communities settle into a slightly slower rhythm.
It’s also the beginning of one of my favorite transformations—the arrival of fall color. Before long, pockets of yellow and gold will begin appearing throughout the Tahoe Basin, Truckee, Hope Valley, and the surrounding Sierra.
For those considering buying a home here, this can also be an excellent time to explore different communities. Without the height-of-summer activity, you can get a different feel for neighborhoods and start imagining what everyday life might actually look like.
What Does Fall Mean for Reno-Tahoe Real Estate?
Real estate doesn't follow exactly the same calendar every year, which is why I always encourage buyers and sellers to look beyond the headlines and focus on what's happening in their particular community and price range.
Reno-Tahoe is especially unique because we're not one single real estate market.
Incline Village can behave differently from Truckee. Tahoe City can be different from Reno. And within those communities, lakefront homes, condominiums, golf properties, primary residences, and second homes can each have their own market dynamics.
That's why local knowledge matters.
If you're thinking about selling, fall can offer an opportunity to reach buyers who are serious about finding a property before winter.
If you're buying, this can be a good time to take another look at properties you've been watching, explore new inventory, and better understand where opportunities may exist.
And if you're not planning to make a move anytime soon? It's still smart to know what's happening with the value of your property.
Enjoy the Season
One of the greatest things about living in Reno-Tahoe is that every season gives us something different to look forward to.
September gives us a little bit of everything—beautiful weather, outdoor recreation, community events, fewer crowds, and the first signs that fall is on its way.
So get outside, enjoy it, and make the most of this wonderful time of year.
